Exploring young children’s thinking through their self-chosen activities
Training Materials
Intellectual search is at its most powerful during the early years. Young
children’s brains are primed to make sense of their experiences and the thinking
part of their brains simply expands through use.
These training materials explore how babies and children are supported to think
when they are engaged in activities that they select for themselves. Each of the
case studies in the DVD captures:
• children’s ideas and thoughts when they take responsibility for their
activities
• adults closely observing the activity and using the observations to affirm,
guide and sometimes deepen children’s thinking.
The case studies are from a range of childcare provisions for children range
from 15 months to 5 years.
The DVD and training booklet are designed to be used flexibly to meet different
needs and are intended to promote discussion rather than highlight exemplary
practice. Practitioners are encouraged to reflect and consider ways in which
they might further strengthen opportunities for children’s thinking to
flourish in their self-chosen activities.
Marion Dowling, Project Director, is an early years
specialist with a national and international reputation as a trainer and
consultant. She is author of a number of books including Young Children’s
Personal, Social and Emotional Development. Marion is a vice president of Early
Education.

Reflecting on Early Childhood Leadership
A research-based resource pack to support
leadership training for boat regional and national needs
Skilled and effective leadership in early childhood settings such as nurseries
day care centres, children’s centres and foundation units within schools has
never beer more important. These training materials investigate different roles.
responsibilities and characteristics of early childhood leaders. They
incorporate leaders' own perspectives and experiences and, at the same time,
allow participants to engage in activities that facilitate reflection or
journeys into leadership the nature of leadership in different types of setting
and the role of mentoring in professorial development.
The DVD and training booklet exemplify different ways of leading in a variety of
settings. The activities are intended to stimulate reflection on the knowledge
and understanding, skills, experience and behaviour needed to be a successful
leader.
The examples of practice in the DVD demonstrate:
Extracts from a day in the life’ of leaders in different contexts, including a
foundation stage unit in a primary school, a children's centre that was formally
a Sure Start programme, a children’s centre that was previously an early
excellence centre and a private day care centre;
Different roles and relationships. skills or competences necessary to carry out
the job and personal qualities associated with early childhood administration,
management and leadership.
The materials are designed to be used flexibly to meet different needs and to
promote discussion and analysis of leadership in different contexts. The
activities provided are linked to specific early childhood leadership examples
to encourage early childhood practitioners and local authority employees
involved in early childhood to reflect upon their successes and areas for
development. It was apparent from the experience of the leaders involved in he
DVD that the opportunity to reflect upon and evaluate in a supportive climate
was rarely available. The materials are thus intended as a means of support and
challenge for current and aspiring leaders to develop reflective and strategic
skills, to increase self-understanding, thinking about complex problems and
looking for alternative problem solutions.
Carol Aubrey. project leader, is professor
of early childhood studies at The University of Warwick. She trained first as a
primary school teacher and then as an educational psychologist. Later, she spent
a number of years in primary teacher education with a particular focus on the
early years. She is currently convener of British Educational Research
Association (BERA) special interest group for early childhood and a member of
BERA council. She is UK editor for Journal of Early Childhood Research.

Supporting young children’s sustained shared thinking
An exploration Training materials Sustained, shared thinking is a process which involves the adult being aware of the child’s interests and understanding, and the adult and child together developing an idea or skill. Providing appropriate contexts for thinking, interacting with children and sharing children’s small group interactions are just some of the ways in which this can be achieved. This DVD and trainers’ booklet exemplify different ways of working with young children to support their thinking. The materials are intended for all practitioners working with babies and young children and will be of interest to parents. Each of the examples of practice in the DVD demonstrate: children thinking in different ways adults providing a suitable context and interacting in ways to confirm, sustain and sometimes challenge children’s thinking. The DVD examples are taken from a range of childcare provision, including a private day nursery, a childminder, a primary school and a nursery school. The children featured are aged from 15 months to 6 years. These training materials are intended to be used flexibly to meet different needs and are designed to promote discussion. The questions in the booklet are linked to each example to encourage practitioners to reflect on their practice and consider ways in which they might refine or extend what they are already doing to develop sustained, shared thinking. Marion Dowling, Project Manager, is an early years specialist with a national reputation as a trainer and consultant. She is author of a number of books, including Education 3-5, Starting School at Four and Young Children’s Personal, Social and Emotional Development. Marion has been president of Early Education since November 2002. £21.75including postage and packing
