Planning for quality in the early years
Jane Cole and Anne Nelson (2008)
a series of leaflets to help providers and practitioners use the Early Years
Foundation Stage in their work with children
These leaflets build on Early Education's previous series of leaflets,
Implementing the Early Years Foundation Stage, and draw on the developing
frameworks across the United Kingdom which cover the age range birth to seven.
The frameworks promote similar key messages and offer guidance to both
experienced and new practitioners as they develop their work with young children
and their families at this significant phase in their lives.
Jane Cole, Early Childhood Consultant and Anne Nelson, Chief Executive of Early
Education draw together themes from the frameworks and focus on key actions to
support schools and settings to improve quality.
This pack consists of five leaflets and a CD-Rom. The leaflets demonstrate that
planning is a process, not a piece of paper, and one that should actively
involve all participants - children, families and practitioners. The leaflets
focus on the interrelated processes of observation, assessment and planning.
Clarity about the role and skill of the adults, with effective leadership, is
key to achieving the shared objectives of enabling all children to make best use
of their developing skills and abilities.
The CD-Rom provides a management tool to demonstrate progress across the nursery
and reception years of individual children and cohorts.
It is based on the framework for England and can be adapted for other countries
in the United Kingdom.
The leaflets draw on the frameworks in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and
Wales. They provide guidance by identifying practical approaches to improve
effective practice, reflective questions to support self-evaluation and quality
improvement.
