Family literacy

Aims: To explore the role of parents and carers and the wider family in helping children’s reading and to identify ways to increase their involvement and give them confidence.

Expected learning outcomes:

  • more awareness of the benefits of parental support for children’s reading
  • greater knowledge of current research and good practice in family literacy
  • more understanding of the barriers to involvement and ways to surmount them
  • strategies for supporting literacy and promoting reading enjoyment in families
  • ideas, content and structure for effective family literacy sessions
  • insight into parents’ and carers’ concerns and ideas for responding to them
  • tips for parents and carers to aid their engagement in their children’s reading
