Thelma Miller trained to be a Primary school teacher at Goldsmiths College, University of London from 1968- 71, studying Drama and Art. Throughout her long career she has been interested in nurturing the creativity in children and adults, finding this the best way to motivate and engage them – and to enjoy!
Her first teaching experiences were in schools for children with emotional behavioural difficulties, developmental delay and or physical disabilities, and following the birth of her children she became interested in the development of young children from birth, and retrained at the Froebel college, Roehampton to become an early years teacher. She was fortunate to lead a pioneering Community Education project for parents and young children called “Wordplay” which took play based activities to shops and centres. With the ending of the ILEA Thelma returned to mainstream teaching, and became the Headteacher of Clyde Early Childhood Centre in Deptford, Lewisham. This designated Early Excellence Centre combined a Nursery School and a Day Care Centre to provide integrated nursery education and care for children from 6 months to four years. The school linked with a Sure Start local programme and later became a Children’s Centre. Clyde was an award winning exemplar of outdoor learning.
She was most recently an Early Years Adviser in Lambeth, supporting the five nursery schools to become Outstanding, and leading a successful 3 year MABD Early Years ‘Buddying programme.
She now works with primary and nursery schools and local authorities throughout London as an independent early years consultant, supporting both high quality play based learning environments and high standards of teaching and learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage. In 2017 Thelma was invited by Professor Tina Bruce to train to become an accredited Froebel Travelling Tutor. This led to an offer to be part of the team completing a 5 year project in Kolkata, India, for the Froebel Trust. She found it inspiring to revisit Froebel’s principles that are so comprehensive, practical, creative and relevant for our work with children today, whatever their circumstances.
