Intent, Implementation and Impact: Exploring the early years ‘curriculum’

Ofsted's new Education Inspection Framework came into force in September 2019. As part of the judgement on 'Quality of education', the framework identifies three key factors: Intent, Implementation and Impact. These factors will be used to evaluate what it is like to be a child in the EYFS. Through sessions with three experts in the field of early education, this conference will examine Intent, Implementation and Impact with reference to best principles and pedagogy for all of those working in the early years.

This day conference will include the following keynotes:


Intent: exploring principled practice and provision

The early years are the basis for long term well-being and lifelong learning, so what adults intend for young children matters. This session will explore the principles underpinning the practice and provision which affirm early childhood as an important stage in its own right and children as active agents in their own learning. It will investigate questions around the social, emotional, and moral purposes of an early years curriculum that is inclusive and based on social justice, and how our actions as practitioners directly shape children’s outcomes and future trajectories.


Implementation: how practitioners provide a meaningful curriculum in practice

Practitioners are challenged to provide an EYFS curriculum with no limits or barriers. This session will consider what this means for the range of children in EYFS provision. It will explore how the learning environment, both indoors and out, enriches and enhances the curriculum on offer. It will investigate how practitioners can sustain an appropriate balance between play and an increasingly adult-led agenda and how the role of the adult must be adapted to suit both contexts. Finally, it will examine how practitioners use assessment to help children extend their thinking and embed their learning.


Impact: Assessment for learning – keeping the child in sight?

Assessment does not stand alone as a separate entity; something we do after teaching to check that children have been learning. It is an integral part of the process of ‘teaching’ young children, but how do we ensure that the cycle of observation, assessment and planning for progress is kept at the heart of the curriculum?  How do we make sure that we view children’s development and learning through respectful, professionally informed, meaningful perspectives amid the various demands to show Impact?
