Delegates just before the conference opened – we had to squeeze in extra seating and still could not meet demand. So there is sure to be a follow-up.

Early Education’s presidentHelen Moylett (@helenmoylett) opened the conference by telling delegates she was feeling “very fired up” and ended by tweeting “we are going away to be bigger and bolder.”

Professor Iram Siraj drew on the EPPE research findings showing the impact of maintained nursery schools – especially those integrated with wider services like Children’s Centres. She described closing maintained nursery schools as an “act of vandalism” and cited EPPE research to show that “integrated nursery schools and children’s centres offer high levels of sustained engagement with parents, to the lifelong benefit of the children.”

Iram called for a “critical mass of reflective and thoughtful practitioners if we are to have high quality early years provision.”

Dr Margy Whalley from the Pen Green Centre for Children and their Families (@PenGreenCentre) shared a video clip from the centre’s “tracer study” showing young adults talking about their lasting memories and the enduring value of coming to the centre in early childhood.

She urged delegates to make links with politicians from all parties saying “there is support across Labour, Liberal and Conservative candidates for high quality early years provision.” Looking back at Early Education’s 90-year history she said that whilst there have been many important and exciting developments in the field, much of the provision on offer is still too narrow.”

Ending the conference, Sylvie Gambell from the National Campaign for Real Nursery Education  (@ncrne) paid tribute to the UK’s nursery schools: “We French are proud of our ecoles maternelles. But they don’t compare to English nursery schools.”
