Positive Relationships: A Problem Solving Approach to Conflict


  • To recognise that social conflict provides a positive opportunity for children to learn and develop a valuable life skill
  • To be proactive in this important area of personal, social and emotional development by providing Early Years professionals with practical ways of mediating conflicts between children


By the end of the training participants will be able to:

  • Recognise conflict situations as opportunities for preschool children to learn important skills
  • Explain how the EYFS can prevent and minimise many problems and conflict
  • Recognise different styles of managing conflict and their effect
  • Understand the opportunities and challenges child development brings to conflict resolution and its relevance particularly to boys' development
  • Discuss the rationale and importance of acknowledging feelings
  • Use language strategies (re-framing) to keep the focus on actions and feelings rather than people
  • Demonstrate the six steps of solving problems and resolving conflicts in a variety of situations

Audience: EY Practitioners working with children birth – 60+ months, PVI settings/schools, Childminders, Parents, Independent and maintained schools
