Using the body as a powerful means of learning is sometimes an under developed strategy within education. Dance and movement offer many insights and opportunities to develop a sense of self and wellbeing as well as underpinning and animating other curriculum areas including verbal language, story construction, sequencing, communication and exploring mathematical and scientific concepts. Peppy will provide an overview of using the arts and creative approaches to rich learning that can thrive in relation to current reforms within EYFS by unpacking art forms such as movement as an art form and as learning tools. This initial session will refresh practice by considering practical ways in which creativity and arts based activities can be woven into every day practice, aiding emotional recovery and creating a positive creative climate for moving forwards. Seeing babies and children as confident and articulate creators, inventors and reflective young beings will be at the heart of this session. The session will involve practical activities, debate and individual and collective reflection.
Participants will reflect on a small gap task and delve into ways in which movement as a language and a learning tool can be elevated within formal and informal settings. Specific ways of developing playful, creative opportunities for babies and children to relate to their bodies, each other, materials and the world around them will be explored more deeply in non-verbal and verbal contexts. The role of us, as educators, in ensuring our babies and children can develop within a climate which encourages practical exploration, experimentation, curiosity and embodied thinking and expression will be examined. Practitioners confidence and appetite for creativity will be refreshed through interactive and collective activities within this session. Past projects will be used to illustrate specific strategies and areas for collective reflection.
Those attending Part 2 will be invited to submit questions ahead of time, and where possible these will be addressed during the session.
Session 1: 24th November, 7pm-8.30pm
Session 2: 8th December, 7pm-8.30pm
The webinar will be delivered by Peppy Hills.
